This is by far the most misunderstood area of criminal law. Almost everyone knows that felonies require an attorney as you can go to prison, but most people think that misdemeanors are no big deal.  “I’m not paying a lawyer to represent me on this.  I will just go in and enter a plea and pay a fine…”.

Three years later they come to our office and say that they need to get this off their record because they can’t get a new job, a student loan, or maybe even credit to buy a house.  Unfortunately, by now it is usually too late.  Many times, even if you are guilty of a misdemeanor, there are alternatives to restrict items that appear on your record.  But the time to do that is when you are in court for that offense, not years after.
